The female cones are what produce the winged nutlets that fall to the ground in winter. You can collect the cones and dry them just a little to release the seeds or collect the seeds directly off the ground. It's important to sow them fresh, as it seems their viability declines as the seeds dry and the weather warms. Seed matures in the cones but can't easily be extracted so we collect in winter instead. Because of the later collection, the seeds have already undergone a cold stratification ahead of sowing. With the seed sown in winter, expect spring germination and fast-growing trees.
