When sown in fall, expect ample germination with fall rains, but sometimes also another round of germination into spring. Slugs can be a nuisance with new germinants. These can be started in partial shade or full sun, but if spring sown maintain consistent moisture through their germination and establishment. Coastal Sage requires well-drained soils or the small plants will rot. If collecting, keep alert for when Coastal Mugwort seed becomes mature as it is subtle. You can bang the browning seed heads into a bucket or bag to capture the seed.

["ADVANTAGES_deer-resistant","ADVANTAGES_edible","ADVANTAGES_fragrant","BLOOMTIME_Apr-Jun","BLOOMTIME_Jul-Sep","FORM_forb","HABIT_rhizomatous","HEIGHT_0.5 - 2 m","HEIGHT_up to 0.5 m","LIGHT_sun","SEED SOWING TIME_fall","SEED SOWING TIME_spring","SOIL_dry","SOIL_mesic","TYPE_perennial
"option1":"1 gal","option2":null,"option3":null
["1 gal
"option1":"10 cm","option2":null,"option3":null
["10 cm
"option1":"Bulk Seed","option2":null,"option3":null
["Bulk Seed
"option1":"Seed Packet","option2":null,"option3":null
["Seed Packet
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0435/5306/3061/products/artemisiasuksdorfii_Custom.jpg?v=1616167511","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0435/5306/3061/products/IMG_3053.jpg?v=1666241501","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0435/5306/3061/products/Artemisiasuksdorfii_Custom_7db00ee5-3d72-444a-aac7-fc46afa90486.jpg?v=1666241501
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0435/5306/3061/products/artemisiasuksdorfii_Custom.jpg?v=1616167511
Size
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0435/5306/3061/products/artemisiasuksdorfii_Custom.jpg?v=1616167511
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0435/5306/3061/products/artemisiasuksdorfii_Custom.jpg?v=1616167511
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0435/5306/3061/products/Artemisiasuksdorfii_Custom_7db00ee5-3d72-444a-aac7-fc46afa90486.jpg?v=1666241501
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0435/5306/3061/products/Artemisiasuksdorfii_Custom_7db00ee5-3d72-444a-aac7-fc46afa90486.jpg?v=1666241501

Coastal Mugwort has the characteristic aroma of the sage species that grow in the interior grasslands and prairies. Artemisia suksdorfii Coastal Mugwort

Description

Coastal Mugwort has the characteristic aroma of the sage species that grow in the interior grasslands and prairies. It grows in full sun to partial shade and appreciates drainage, which is why you often find it growing gravelly areas on the seashore. Coastal Sage is a herb, but gets quite tall and woody, growing almost like a small shrub especially in deeper soil. Eaten raw, the plant is quite bitter, but it can be used as a culinary herb to flavour other foods. This is a great choice for those who might have too many deer grazing their gardens, as deer don't find it palatable. Wind-pollinated.

Growing From Seed

Growing your own native plants from seed is the most economical way to add natives to your project or home garden. The seeds of native plants have built-in dormancy mechanisms that protect them from germinating before killing frosts or periods of drought.

In cultivation, the successful gardener must become familiar with these conditions to unlock the dormancy mechanism and stimulate germination. We are developing thorough seed germination categories in the Seed Details section above to help you successfully grow the native seed we sell.
