Camassia leichtlinii ssp. suksdorfii Great Camas

Description

A stunning perennial wildflower in the Asparagus plant family with purplish-blue flowers (or sometimes even white) and a large edible* bulb. Yellow, pollen-packed stamens contrast against the colourful tepals and the large, open flowers draw in a rich diversity of pollinators. The bulbs of Great Camas divide readily in deep, rich soils and can be grown in full sun to partial shade.

Fall and early winter are ideal seasons to be planting bulbs.

Some of our bare bulbs are at a mature, flowering age and can be expected to flower once established, if planted in a suitable location. It can take a few years to establish sufficient roots that can support flowering, and is dependent on soil - Great camas thrives in deep, rich soils. Read more tips about growing Great Camas on this blog post

Note:  *Edibility depends on the preparation of the plant. Always do your own research prior to consuming plant parts and eat at your own risk. This plant is rich in local Indigenous food traditions, we strongly recommend that non-Indigenous people take time to study and understand the complexities of the species before using or consuming this or other native plants.  We recommend learning in a good way first-hand as is possible, or proper resources such as the book Saanich Ethnobotany by Nancy Turner and Richard Hebda.

Growing From Seed

Growing your own native plants from seed is the most economical way to add natives to your project or home garden. The seeds of native plants have built-in dormancy mechanisms that protect them from germinating before killing frosts or periods of drought.

In cultivation, the successful gardener must become familiar with these conditions to unlock the dormancy mechanism and stimulate germination. We are developing thorough seed germination categories in the Seed Details section above to help you successfully grow the native seed we sell.
