Native Grasses of Southern Vancouver Island: Workshop Series

Are you curious about the native grasses of Vancouver Island? Native grasses are an integral part of our local ecosystems, from beaches and meadows to forests and wetlands. This unique plant family supports insects and pollinators, build healthy soils, and help create rich, resilient habitats. At Satinflower Nurseries, we’ve been learning to recognize and appreciate them together through our annual native grass workshop, where fellow plant enthusiasts come to connect, explore, and build their identification skills.

With the 2025 session having just concluded, our three-session grass class series included topics on the ecology and biology of Vancouver Island native grasses and equipped participants with practical identification skills through field trips and classroom exercises. Held across two classroom evenings and a weekend field session, the course brought together a wonderful group of plant enthusiasts, restoration practitioners, and curious learners. From dissecting grass florets under a microscope to walking through the diverse ecosystems of ḴEḴÁȺYEKEN Witty’s Lagoon, the class offered a unique opportunity to slow down and connect with these often-overlooked plants.

On the first day, participants learned grass-specific terminology and physical features. Participants got an up-close look at some of these key physical features and characteristics with live dissections of grass samples, then headed outside at the nursery to observe these traits in living plants. Building on this knowledge, the second session focused on “keying out” species by looking at physical features under a microscope and working through a grass ID key together. We also discussed the types of habitats where you might expect to find these local species, and how the form and location can offer clues to identify species beyond using a key.

On the final day, our class explored ḴEḴÁȺYEKEN Witty's Lagoon to see these species growing where they occur in their natural habitats. Observing grass species outdoors is an essential part of coming to know and appreciate their role in local ecosystems. After thoughtful conversations, shared observations, and a lunch break on the beach, we wrapped up the day back at the nursery with a session on how to grow native grasses at home. Participants learned about seasonal growth cycles, seed saving and propagation techniques. Everyone received seed packets, potted plants, and the confidence to continue their learning beyond the workshop!

We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us for this class. Your curiosity, care, and commitment to native plants continue to inspire us. We can’t wait to see how native grasses show up in your gardens, projects, and community spaces in the seasons to come!
